Description
The purpose of this programme is to introduce the theory, concepts and the science behind Solar PV (Photo-voltaic) technologies, including the fundamental concepts of solar energy, electricity, how solar PV panels and arrays are constructed and function. It covers their workings, installation and how green funding can be accessed to accelerate their deployment.

This programme is suitable for learners with a interest in sustainable technologies and those who wish to develop the skills necessary for a career in this industry (including those learners studying engineering, plumbing, construction and multi-skills).

This programme is designed to be delivered as a stand-alone programme (e.g. For adults via AEB funding), or to run along-side other programmes of learning as part of a study programme.

  • A single unit of 20 GLH - available on-line

  • Suitable for all learners

  • Assessment is by two on-line multiple-choice quiz covering the theory and the practical elements of instillation.

Learners who complete the programme are awarded a digital credential from City & Guilds, which states that they can understands concept of solar energy, how photovoltaic cells work and how home solar systems are installed.

The programme is made up of the following sections:

  • Section 1: Introduction to solar energy and electricity

  • Section 2: Introduction to solar energy production

  • Section 3: PV materials and applications

  • Section 4: Building PV systems

  • Section 5: Making a PV system financially viable

  • Section 6: Installing PV systems

  • Final assessment

Final assessment - is made up of two mutiple choice tests with a pass rate of 60% covering the theory and the practical instillation of solar PV systems.
